Here is what is coming up this week!
Writing- We are writing our first opinion piece as a class to learn the steps of writing an opinion piece! We are also stopping to learn about how to hook our readers, linking word, and how to support our opinion using examples. Reading- We are back to meeting in our guided reading groups! And this week we are learning about the climax and falling action in a story and the sequence of events in a story! Math- We will take our math test tomorrow! Students brought home a study guide tonight. They have done very well with finding the area of the shape, however, finding the area of a shape with more than four sides AND that has missing lengths was a little bit of a doozy. We have decided to not test students on finding the missing lengths because it is not what the standard states. They will have to find the area of a shape with more than 4 sides but they have shown that they can handle that! ;) Social Studies- We are still learning about economics and this week we will be talking about producers and consumers and supply and demand. Remember, if you are cleaning out any closets, drawers, candy cupboards (etc, etc) at home and have anything that can be donated to our school store, send it in! We would be happy to use it! (trinket sized toys, ear buds, and candy are the types of of things we're looking for! Nothing too fancy!) Other Announcements: *Tiger Pride will be NEXT Friday, January 30th at 2:30!

It is taking me a LOT of effort to make sure I write/type "2015" on things! I hope the first couple of weeks of this new year has been wonderful! I also hope your families are staying warm in this freezing weather! Christmas is over! I am so done with cold and ready for spring!
On top of the weather, we have a crazy cold/flu season this year! Just a reminder of our district's wellness/sick policy. Click HERE and scroll to page 11. We have gone over covering sneezes and coughs, good handwashing practices, and good hygiene at school so we don't get sick or get other sick. We also have a lot of chapped hands and lips going on from all of this cold, dry air and extra handwashing! Students are allowed to bring chapstick to bring and put in their pocket or desk. Here is what is coming up next week in our room: Writing- With the new quarter, we have started a new writing unit. We are now learning about opinion and will be practicing and publishing opinion pieces this quarter. Reading The first week of the new semester is a great time to review classroom procedures. Since Daily 5 is such an independent practice for the students, we took time to reveiw what we should be doing during our rotations while the teacher is meeting with a reading group. We took time to rebuild stamina with reading and writing as well. Next week, we will get back to our normal schedule with our guided reading groups. Math This week, we started learning about area and the ways to find area. Next week, we will be moving on to something a little more difficult and learn to break apart a polygon and find the area and using the distributive property. This is a short unit and we will be ready to test tentatively by the end of next week. Social Studies We have started a new unit learning about economics. This is an exciting unit because we have an ongoing activity that we use to help us learn about economics. On Monday, we will start our Tiger Economy. Students will be "paid" (with fake money from our math kits) for doing their job and other jobs throughout the day. This is getting to school on time, turning in certain assignments, etc. They are also expected to eventually pay taxes and fines for breaking the rules. The activity ends with a class store that we will do sometime in February. If you have any extra little toys from kid's meals, books, candy, etc that you would like to be rid of and donate to our store, feel free to send it in! We would be MORE than happy to use it! (AND grateful!) Other Announcements: **REPORT CARDS come home tomorrow! Watch for your child's in their backpack! SNOWMAN CONTEST Between now and the last week of January students can make a snowman, out of real snow, and enter the contest. Adults and siblings can help the Willard East Student. When complete take a picture and write your name and teacher code on the back. Then turn it into the art room before February 6th. If more than one student from East helps build the snowman, then both names go on the back. Be creative and don't be afraid to experiment with color. Last year's winner was a snow pig holding a snow pancake. February 9th, you can go on the art website and vote for your favorite snowman. ART WEBSITE The winning snowman will be announced at the end of the month and receive a prize |
