There is nothing more exciting than having a normal day at school and then the power flickers off...and stays off. What excitement we had as our morning went on without any power! Fortunately, it was a nice, sunny day and our room stayed warm and light enough to continue working! But there was some curiosity about school with no lights. ("How DO we go to the bathroom?!") Everything went very smooth and the lights were on before we headed to lunch!
Here are some OTHER things that are going on in our classroom this week! :) Reading We have started to talk about cause and effect. Reading groups will be put on hold next week as I give DRA's to students before the end of the quarter. Writing We working on our district writing prompt this week and students wrapped up today! What will we do with the remaining week and a half until Spring Break!?! POETRY! It is such a fun unit but unfortunately, it isn't a 3rd grade standard anymore. (So we have to find somewhere to squeeze it in!) Math We started a new unit on fractions. This week we have reviewed numerators, denominators, how to write a fraction that represents a whole number. We have some pretty fun and hands on activities to do with fractions! I am excited for this unit! Science We had a very short week last week so we had to wrap up talking about the sun and revolution and rotation. This week, we will start to talk about the moon and patterns we see with the moon. Upcoming Dates! Tiger Pride Tiger Pride is this Friday in the Gym at 2:30! Come join us and celebrate being a tiger! Book Fair Next week will be a big week at Willard East! Sorry this is delayed! This time of the year seems like it is THE longest part of the year, yet it can get so busy and it feels as though the days fly by! (How does that happen?!)
Here is what is going on in our class this week! Writing- We have started a new opinion piece in writing! We completed our first piece as a class. We all chose what sport we thought was the best and used that as our topic. Then we all learned how to brainstorm and come up with reasons and examples of those reasons that support our opinion. Now, students are working a little more independently on something they feel needs a change in their world! This could be something at school or in their big world! Reading- We have been learning about point of view and how we can tell the point of view in a story. Math- We are still working on our geometry unit! This week we have learned about attributes of 2 dimensional shapes and learning the names of these shapes. We will also start looking at parts of a whole shape (a little introduction to fractions before diving in during our next unit!) Science/SS- We are wrapping up our economics unit! We will have our class store this Friday. Depending on how much we have left over from our first store, we may continue to do the "class dollars". We have started a new science unit since wrapping up economics. We are starting our space unit! This week, we are learning about the sun as a star and the patterns that take place each day! Valentines Day- Our party will be Feb. 12th at 2:45. We are sending in $2 to help cover the cost of party supplies. This helps cut out the step of trying to organize who is bringing what and making sure we have enough. Mrs. Shaw has gone ABOVE AND BEYOND for our parties and has thrown 2 amazing parties for our class so far and I can only imagine what our Valentine's Party will bring! Feel free to come join us at 2:30 on February 12th! We will do Valentine's Day boxes if your child would like to make one. The box must be small enough that it can fit on their desk. And for storage reasons, please do not send in boxes any earlier than Wednesday, February 11th. If your child wishes to pass out Valentines, we do ask that you have them bring enough for the entire class to enjoy one! I will send home a class list by this Friday! Change-a-Life Penny War- We are in the midst of a penny war! So far, our class is winning. But I did spot a 3rd grader from another class POURING silver coins into our piggy today!!! Remember, pennies HELP our class and we want to give silver coins and dollars to other classes to SABOTAGE their points earned. ;) ALL donations are greatly appreciated. The fundraiser will go through Friday and proceeds will benefit the Willard's Charitable Foundation and Officer Pearson's family. (Officer Pearson's wife is a member of the Willard family and teaches in Willard) Upcoming Dates: **Valentine's Day Party- February 12th @ 2:45 **No School- February 13th and February 16th |
