We are beginning to wrap up a great first quarter! Last week we finished talking about writing narratives and the writing process. AND we introduced multiplication! Keep working with on memorizing multiplication facts with your child at home! This doesn't have to be a long, hard process with just flash cards. Giving them random numbers while driving to football or in an elevator and asking them if they know product of those two numbers. Mrs. Uckele also has some great multiplication games on her website under 3rd Grade, then click learning, then math.
Here is what is coming up this week! Writing- We are still working on writing a narrative. Students are finishing up our first piece where we have walked though each step of the writing process. We will start another one this week that they will do on their own before they have to complete the first quarter prompt. Reading- I am wrapping up giving DRA's and the rest of the class is working on our Daily 5 stations. Next week we will begin guided reading! Math- Students are starting out the week reviewing multiplication story problems. Then we will move onto using arrays to solve multiplication problems and next week we are moving on to division!!! We have had many conversations about how division isn't too hard ESPECIALLY if you have been working on memorizing your multiplication facts!! Science- Tomorrow we will take a very short quiz on matter and energy! Other Announcements: *Tomorrow is Open House! Smokin' Wheels BBQ will be here to purchase dinner from 5:30-7. Well, my first full week so far has been a success! I think we are all getting used to each other and the students have adjusted so well to the transition of teachers. I am very proud of them! And of course, I am so incredibly thankful that Mrs.McGuire was able to be in our room for those 5 weeks. She is such a great teacher and the class really loves her.
Here is what is going on this week: Writing- We are still working on our personal narratives. Today, we talking about good endings. Tomorrow we will talking about using colorful words in our writing. Then, we will revise and edit and hopefully we will be able to pubish by the end of the week. Reading- This week I have started giving the DRA. This will continue through next week. After that, I can place students in reading groups and then we will begin guided reading. Math- Today, we started multiplication! We are talking about groups and how many in each group. We also talked about how multiplication is repeated addition but it's just a faster way of doing it! We will continue with learning about multiple groups and repeated addtion this week. One thing about multiplication is we do teach the foundation of it but we do not have time to "teach" the memorization part of it. We teach some techniques and ways students can solve multiplcation problems if they do not know their facts but students have been told how important it is that they learn their facts. BE SURE TO PRACTICE THESE NIGHTLY. It is vital for your child to succeed in math now and as they progress through school through the upper grades. Math tests- we went over these yesterday and they went home last night! Overall, the class did very well! I am very proud of them! Fundraisers- Packets went home on Friday. Today, an order sheet went home for the coupon books. Please collect money at the time of order but you don't have to send it in with the "coupon" to recieve the bear. You DO NOT have to sell anything if you don't' wish to. However, the coupon books MUST be returned. They are worth $20. If you do not return it, your child will not be able to attend the spring field trip. All fundraiser books and money is due by Oct. 3rd! Tiger Pride is this Friday! We will get our Friday shirts at school on Friday so we will all have them on for our class picture. Tiger Pride starts at 2:30 in the Gym. Feel free to come and celebrate our successes with us! Upcoming Dates: *Open House- September 30th Come see what we've been up to and sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences at this time! *Book Fair- Sept 29-Oct 3rd **Next week, I will be gone two half days. This is down from 1 full day and two half days. I had a full day meeting that has been cancelled for now. Luke has 2 doctor's appointments next week. I usually don't notify you every single time I have to be gone, but just coming back from maternity leave, I feel like you have the right to know why I am absent so much following a five week absence. Thank you for being understanding. I know the class will do fine and Mrs. McGuire will be here one of the half days I am gone, so I know they will REALLY enjoy that! The time has come! My last few days of maternity leave are wrapping up and on Thursday I will be returning and starting my school year! This time with Luke has been amazing and as you all know- seemed to go entirely WAY too fast. However, I am excited to get to know this group. I have heard nothing but amazing things about them! I know we will have a wonderful year!
Here is what is going on this week! Reading- Students are wrapping up building stamina with Daily 5. I will begin giving the DRA next week to determine reading levels. Once I finish those up, we will begin reading groups! Writing- Students are working on "bold beginnings" and are starting to write a personal narrative. Be sure your student is looking over spelling words before the test on Friday! Math- This week will wrap up Unit 1. Students are working on solving word problems using addition and subtraction. They will also begin reviewing for our first math test that will be on Friday. Look for a review sheet that is coming home on Wednesday! Other Announcements: *FRIDAY IS 1/2 DAY! Students will be released at 12:40 and teachers will participate in professional development for the afternoon. Friday is also our Fundraiser kick-off! Fundraiser packets will come home by the end of the week (either Thursday or Friday). *Open House is coming up on September 30th. Come see what your student has been up to this first quarter, sign up for Parent-Teacher Conferences, and much more! It sounds like things are still going really well in our class these first few weeks! Mrs. McGuire has bragged on these kiddos and how wonderful they are! (But I wasn't expecting any different!)
Here is what is going on this week: Writing- Students are learning to write by going through the steps of the writing process. They will also begin to work on personal narratives this week or telling personal stories. The class took their first spelling test last Friday! Don't forget to study the words each week! Reading- Our class is still working on launching the Daily 5 and learning the different activities and building stamina to do these activities for 20 minutes. Math- The class took their first pre-test last week. Pre-tests are not to grade the student on their ability but to give the teacher insight on what needs to be taught and what standards might need a little extra attention. This week, students will work on the properties of addition. Social Studies- The class has been working on locating the bordering states of Missouri and to locate the Rivers that run through our state. A study guide will come home today, Thursday, September 4th, and the test will be Monday, September 8th.
