Here are some reminders for things that are coming up in the next two weeks!!!
Picture Day! Tomorrow (Tuesday, September 27th) is picture day! Students will have their individual pictures taken and a class picture! Tiger Pride Our first Tiger Pride of the 2016-2017 school year is this Friday, September 30th, at 2:30 in the Gym! Come join us and celebrate all of the many successes here at Willard East! Open House Open house is NEXT Thursday, October 6th, from 6-7 pm. There will be so much to do! Come see your child's classroom and some of the work we have done over the last quarter, sign up for parent/ teacher conferences, visit the Book Fair, get help with your Mastery Connect account and so much more! Fall Party Fall parties will be on Friday, October 14th. I'm still looking for a parent or a couple of parents that might be interested in helping plan. I will send out a sign up email in the next week or so to ask for donations. If you are at all interested in leading a game or a craft of some sort, let me know and we can arrange that!

The first month of school has passed and we are settling into our routines!
Writing: We have spent the last month setting up our "Writer's Notebook". Students got to decorate the notebook and make it theirs. We have talked about various ways to help us write. This week, we are starting to write our first story that we will publish. Students will be learning about the writing process and I will model each step for them as we go through the 5 steps. Reading: Last week, I started giving our fall DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment). Students have learned expectations for doing Daily 5 and are doing 3 sessions a day at this time while I test everyone. We should be ready to start groups by the first week of October. (IF not sooner!) Be sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes a day outside of school. There are SO many benefits to this and one of the greatest ones being your child reading at grade level. Stay tuned for a Reading Log to start coming home in the next couple of weeks. More info to come! Math: We have a new math curriculum this year! So far so good! We are finishing up our 2nd topic. Students are working on strategies to solve multiplication facts. Social Studies: We are currently working on a unit about maps. One of our standards is for students to identify and name the 8 bordering states of Missouri and the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Students brought home a map on Friday to help them practice for the upcoming quiz this Friday. We will practice in class and even have a little song to help us remember the states. If students need another map, let me know and I would be happy to send another home with them! Other Announcements: Food Drive: The Willard East Food Drive for the food pantry is underway! 3rd grade is in charge of bringing in canned meats! This is a great way to help serve our community! There is a table set up across from the office to set donated items! Open House: Mark your calendars! Open House will be October 6th from 6:00-7:00. Fall Parties: Fall parties are on Friday, October 14th. Watch for more info to be coming soon! Welcome, September! It already feels like we have been in school for quite some time and it's only the beginning of September! Your kiddos are already "professional 3rd graders" and they haven't even been doing this for a month yet! :)
Here are some reminders for our upcoming week: Fundraiser: Don't forget that the fundraiser orders and money are due on Tuesday, September 6th. Skate Party: There will be a skate party this coming Thursday from 6-8 at Skateland off S. Campbell in Springfield. The cost is $5 and it does benefit Willard East! I am going to TRY my hardest to be there if I can. My husband mows as a little side business and if he is mowing, I probably won't be able to make it. (I can only imagine my 2 year old, Luke, running into the middle of the rink and causing a huge pile up of skaters!!!) Mastery Connect: I'm sure you have now received at least 3 emails from the school about Mastery Connect or from Mastery Connect. I did enter our first assignment into Mastery Connect on Thursday. It should be in your child's backpack today. If they didn't get one back, I'm still needing for them to get it turned in. The assignment was only 2 questions on the worksheet. Much of our book worksheets are also used for guided practice, meaning we're still learning and discuss those problems together as part of the lesson. Remember, it is perfectly okay to see yellow on assignments! :) Your child is still learning and rarely do we master everything we try the first time on our own. Earbuds Remember to send in earbuds or headphones with your child if you have not already. These were a part of the 3rd grade supply list and they use them daily in our class and in other special classes. You can find cheap pairs at Dollar Tree, the Dollar Spot at Target, or the check out lines at Wal-mart. This does need to be a pair they can leave at school all of the time, so a cheap pair works PERFECTLY! Upcoming Dates:
