Busy week up ahead!
Writing- Last week, we started our next unit of writing. This is a non- fiction unit where students will become experts on a topic. Last week, we all chose an animal and started researching on a kid friendly site called Pebble Go. This week , we will learn about hooking our readers with good beginnings, using transitional words, and organizing our writing using paragraphs. Reading- Our reading groups are in full swing now. As a class, we are working on identifying the main idea of a passage. We will also focus on this as our main skill in our small groups. Math- This week we will finish up a unit on data collection and graphing. We have a couple of fun activities to do to collect data about measurement and then will plot that data on a graph. Science- We have been discussing the scientific process. On Friday, we started a class experiment and will go through the process step by step. Ask your student what has happened to our gummy bears after placed in water (or Sprite) over the weekend! Upcoming Dates: * Pumpkin Grams are on sale all week this week. *Tomorrow is our 3rd Grade Program!!! Mrs. Chatman and the 3rd grade have been working hard. They will preform at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon as a dress rehearsal for the school. Parents are welcome to come watch! The "main event" is tomorrow evening at 7:00 in the Willard East Gym. I will be in my room at 6:30 . Students need to come to our classroom before the program! * Tiger Pride is THIS Friday at 2:30 in the gym. *Parent/ Teacher Conferences are next week! I will send home reminders this week. If you have not signed up for a conference, email me and we will get a time set up! *NO SCHOOL next Friday, October 30- Tuesday, November 3rd for Fall Break. School will resume on Wednesday, November 4th. The change of seasons always excites me! Something new is in store for us whether it be weather, holidays, or whatever! Although, I am sad for the nice warm weather and sunny days to leave, I do enjoy these mild temperatures and sunny days. Here is what is coming up next week! Writing: Students have finished their 1st narrative. They were on their desks at Open House. These were our first pieces to publish and I am really impressed with them!!! This class already uses such great detail in their writing. We finished this week up talking about using dialogue in our stories and how to punctuate it. A lesson that will be revisited MANY times throughout the year...along with paragraphs, sentences, writing complete sentences... ;) Next week, students will write another story all on their own for our district writing prompt to finish up our narrative unit for this quarter. Reading: The students have been working independently on Daily 5 and I have been giving our DRA's the last 2 weeks and will finish up today. Then, we will get to start reading groups (yay!) BE SURE your child is reading at home NIGHTLY. Even they are reading on grade level, READ! This is the most important, nightly homework your child can do! Math We finished up our first unit on addition and subtraction. This week we have been working on collecting data and using graphs to show data. Next week, we will continue working with bar graphs and begin to look at line plots as well. Science- We have started a unit on the scientific process. This week really has been introduction to the process and why we have this process (method). Next week, we will question things we are curious about, decide if we can test this to answer our question, and form a hypothesis. Other Announcements: *Picture retakes are Wednesday, Oct 7. If your child wasn't here the day pictures were taken, they will have their picture taken on Wednesday. Forms are available if you need one to order! If you are unhappy with your child's photos, they cannot be retaken/replaced unless the entire package is returned. * Fall parties are NEXT Friday. (October 9th) Our party will be from 10:15-11:00. HERE is a sign up sheet for supplies. *Friday October, 9th is ALSO a 1/2 day for students and the end of our first quarter of school! School will dismiss at 12:35. *Parent/ Teacher Conferences are October 26-30.
