I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Years and your kiddo's had a relaxing two weeks off...or a fun packed two weeks. ;)
We are back and in the groove! It honestly didn't hit me that I had not done a blog post until yesterday! Here is what is going on this week! Writing We have started a new unit about writing our opinions! We have talked a lot about fact and opinion and have started collecting ideas to write about. Next week we will begin writing our first opinion piece. Reading We are putting "guided reading groups" on the back burner for a few weeks. Not to fear! We are still reading but in a "book club" fashion. Students were given a book on their reading level and are still grouped in their reading groups. Instead of the teacher leading the discussion, they get to discuss their books and questions. This week I have tried to hang back and let them do the leading and talking and they have done great. And they seem so excited about the books they are reading! Math We are finishing up area this week and will begin.....(wait for it!)....MULTIPLICATION. TOMORROW. We will begin by relating multiplication to groups of objects and repeated addition. Then we'll go into using skip counting to help us solve/ learn multiplication. If you don't have a set of flash cards at home, you may want to pick up a pair and start working on learning facts. On the go a lot? There are MANY apps you can download or just give your child facts in the car. For example, if you're at the Dr's Office, name two numbers in the elevator to multiply. Or the two numbers on the speed limit sign. The more they use them, the more they will remember them! Social Studies We are starting a unit on our government. This week we have started talking about U.S. symbols. Other Announcements: Grade cards come home TODAY. I intended on yesterday but we worked up until the dismissal bell rang and it didn't happen. Ask your child for their report card! And of course, please feel free to call or email me with any questions or concerns you have! Upcoming Dates: Monday, January 18th- No School for Students Friday, January 29th- January Tiger Pride Thursday, February 4th- Family Reading Night
