Weeks are flying by! I know I say this often but it's so true! Here are some updates for the rest of this week and next week!
Writing- We are finished with personal narratives...for now. We'll have another unit where we cover fiction writing and then personal narratives again during the 4th quarter. Our new unit is one of my absolute favorites!!!! Informational/ non-fiction writing! Like narratives, our first piece will be a learning piece we will do together and learn about text features, taking notes, re-wording facts we find in our research- just to name a few. We are currently researching an animal of our choosing to inform our readers about! Reading- You've heard it before! Reading and writing go hand in hand! So what are we covering pretty heavy in reading?! Non-fiction texts! If you are reading at home, check out a good non-fiction book to read together! Let your child point out the features of a non-fiction text and tell you how they differ from a fiction book! A goal for me for 2nd quarter is to start having a weekly reading log. I am putting it here so I can't forget about my goal. ;) While I'm sorting out how I want to do this, be sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes outside of school. Research shows reading is one of THE most important thing you can do at home to help students academically. Math- We are nearing the end of our 4th topic in our new math. This unit focused on using multiplication to divide. We talked about fact families, strategies to divide, as well as seeing the connection between multiplication and division. Students hopefully have noticed how much easier division is if they know their facts. We're aiming for next Wednesday (Nov. 2nd) for our Topic 4 assessment. I will send home a study guide this Friday for students to use for practice if they would like. It is not required but will be VERY, VERY helpful as it's a form of the topic 4 assessment. There are 3 we can choose from and they are all pretty similar. We just take a different form. **BE SURE TO BE PRACTICING MULTIPLICATION FACTS AT HOME!!!** This doesn't have to be an all night ordeal. Go though a few flashcards or come up with some of your own facts to give your child while you're making dinner, on your way to practice, commercial breaks, etc. They more they hear or see them, the better! Flashcards are fairly inexpensive and I have found them at Walmart (either in school supply section or book section. I've seen both at different locations), Target often has cheap sets if you're ever there, or trusty ole' Amazon. And there is always the free version...your child can make their own. :) Science- We have started a space unit! This week we learned about the sun being a star and the main source of light and energy for our planet! We will also cover how the moon does not produce it's own light and how shadows change throughout the day! Upcoming Dates: * Friday, October 28- Tiger Pride Assembly at 2:30 * Nov 1. and 3rd- Parent/ Teacher Conferences * November 4th-8th- NO SCHOOL
