October is a busy month and it's hard to believe that it is 1/2 over! Here is what is going on in our classroom:
Reading- We have started our guided reading groups. Students got their first book and assignments this week and things are off to a great start! Please be sure to keep reading nightly at home with your child. Even if they are a high reader, the more they read, the more they will continue to grow. Reading is also directly linked to writing and the better reader they are, they better writer they will be. Writing- We have finished our unit on personal narratives. This week, we have been talking about writing using our 5 senses. Students wrote a story about being in a "spooky house" (NOT a haunted house). We started to write these after reading "Ghost Hour, Spook Hour" by Eve Bunting. A young boy is frightened thinking there is some spooky stuff going on in his house during a storm, but realizes when the lights come on, it was all just his imagination. Then we brainstormed the senses that the author used to provide a good description and detail about his encounter that stormy night. Next week, we will be starting on our informative writing unit. Math- This week, we learned about multiplication and division being inverse operations and that they can undo each other. The students did well with the concept but not knowing their facts really slowed them down on their work. PLEASE keep working on facts at home- even if it is just a few minutes a night. It will REALLY benefit them now and in the years to come. Next week we will learn to multiply by multiples of ten (2x50) and will test by the end of next week or the beginning of the week of Oct. 27. Social Studies This week, we talked about the symbols of our nation and what they stand for. We also started learning about rules and laws and why we have them. Other News: Fall parties will be on October 31st at 2:45. We need three, medium sized pumpkins to be donated for the class activity. Please email me if you are willing to donate a pumpkin to our class! Each student will need to bring $2 for supplies for the fall party! You can start sending that in with your child at the beginning of next week! **Parent/Teacher Conferences will start next Thursday. If you were not able to attend Open House and sign up for a time, I have sent a note home with your student. Please return that ASAP so we can get a time scheduled. I have to have a conference for each student. I will also send home reminders at the beginning of next week. You will also pick up your fundraiser items the night of conferences. *Tiger Pride is Oct. 24th at 2:30
