We are well into November and it's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is right around the corner. And before we know it, it will be the Christmas season! We are keeping plenty busy here in room 403 and both will be here and gone before we know it! The weather is definitely colder this week. Be sure to send your child with a warm coat and clothes for outdoor recess!
This week we began and wrapped up a short unit on measurment. Students measured to the nearest inch, half inch, and told time to the nearest 5 minutes. Although we are stepping away from measurment for a little bit, keep working with your child. Let he or she practice measuring items at home to the neartest inch and half inch. Also, have them practice telling time on an analog clock. Have them use your watch or a clock in the house. This will help them use these skills and keep them fresh until we come back to them again. Our next unit, we will begin working on estimation and applying operations to add and subtract. Remember, we don't always have homework that corresponds with our lesson, especially with the last two units. (A lot was done in class with graphs and measurment.) There will be a little more with this unit. Right now, here is what our math schedule looks like for next week: Monday: Introducing the 1,000's chart. No Homework Tuesday: Reading, Writing, and Sequencing Numbers. Homework: Unit 3 Pg. 5 Wednesday: Estimating 100's No Homework Thursday: Recognizing groups of 10 in a 3 digit number. Homework: Unit 3, Pg. 13 Friday: Recognizing groups of 10 in a 3 digit number. Homework: Unit 3, pg 20 Writing- We have been working on word choice and this week we have started writing an opinion piece about some of our favorite Thanksgiving foods! Social Studies- Last week, our school held a mock election. We didn't discuss politics or the parties. Instead, we focused on the importance of voting and how that is a great privilege we have in our country. Students filled out voter registration cards and checked in with their cards to recieve a ballot. The winner at Willard East was Mitt Romney. Hopefully the students learned how important of a duty it is to vote and it will be a lesson that will help remind them of this civil duty when they are 18! In class, we are still talking about government and this week we will be looking at how a bill becomes a law! Tuesday evening there will be a PTO meeting. The meeting will be at 6:30 and is the only meeting this quarter. Also, mark your calendars for Friday evening! PTO is hosting a movie night here at Willard East and will be showing "The Lorax". Watch your students backpack for more details! Next week is a short week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday! We WILL have school Monday and Tuesday, but NOT Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. I think that is all for this week! Have a great week!
