It's hard to believe that we are already to the week before Thanksgiving and that the holidays are just around the corner! Here is what is going on this week!
Writing- We are finishing up our final copies of our informational writing. Most students are finished. There are a handful that needed to finish up today. For the rest of the week, we are working on activities for Thanksgiving. We are learning and writing a class compact, much like the compact the pilgrims had on the Mayflower. Reading- Our writing unit leads us into our reading lesson for the week and we are continuing to learn about the pilgrims. We will use the book "Molly's Pilgrim" to help us learn about the trip to the America and some history behind Thanksgiving. Math- We are continuing to work on 2 step word problems. This week we will learn about making a picture to help them solve a 2 step word problem. Later in the week, students will learn about how to solve a 2 step word problem where they will use more than one operation. PLEASE keep working on math facts with your child. Many students do not have their multiplication facts and this makes our math much harder for them to solve. Social Studies- We are learning about the 3 branches of government and what each branch does. Other Announcements: *There will be a PTO meeting Tuesday, November 18, at 6:00 pm. Everyone is welcome. There will be childcare provided. *Tiger Pride is THIS Friday, November 21st at 2:30. *Come and Join us Friday, November 21, from 6:30-8:30 for a fun FREE movie and popcorn night. Writing- We have finished our rough draft of our first informational piece. We have also learned how to peer edit and next we will write our final copy. At the beginning of the week we learned a new property called the distributive property that works with multiplication. Today, we will move on to two-step word problems Science- We are learning about what tools scientists need to sometimes use when conducting an experiment. We are currently working on measuring with a ruler. Other Announcements: **Picture retakes are TOMORROW, Friday, Nov. 14th. ** There are only 25 yearbooks left! Jostens has agreed increase our order amount by how many books are ordered until December 31. We have purchased 125 this year, but you will be guaranteed a book if your order before December 31. After January 1, you will only get a book if there are any left. You can order online or send in $15 in an envelope with your students name, teacher, grade, and Yearbook on the front. One tradition at Willard East is helping out those who are less fortunate and giving to help make their holiday a little better! And it's a great way to teach our children about how to give to those in need. Each class will bring a specific item. Our class is in charge of bringing toilet paper for our baskets! This week we introduced Weekly Reader's to our room! Weekly Reader is published by Scholastic and is a news magazine for kids. It not only teaches them about current events but also exposes them to other types of non-fiction texts other than books! |
