Alright...I know I misinformed you all about the Penny War! (And had a nice typo in my email. That's what I get for trying to do laundry in the middle of sending out a last minute email!) When I sent the email, we had been told that was still the last day. Then it was extended. I am so sorry about confusion! The Penny War CONTINUES until Tuesday. Pennies and dollar bills count FOR us and silver coins against us (or "take away" from our total). Right now, we are winning, but Hillenburg's class has had the weekend to dig up some coins...both good and bad! The winning class in each grade level wins an extra P.E. with Coach J. So, check the laundry room and the coin tray in the car and see if we can stay in the lead. I keep reminding the students that even if we don't win, everyone is helping out toward a good cause!
Here is what is in store for the week: Writing: We will continue to work on some persuasive writing, but we will also get to explore some poetry toward the end of this week and next! Toward the beginning of the week, we will work on organizing our information into paragraphs. This is something we do every unit, but we'll hit on it again, as well as adding more information to our writing. Reading: We will finish "The Kidnapped King" this week in reading. After we finish this unit on mysteries, we will get to do a little poetry in reading for the rest of this week and next! Poetry is such a fun unit to explore and unfortunately is no longer a part of third grade standards. We are ahead of where we need to be so we will take this opportunity to explore a little poetry and have fun with it! Math: In math, we are still looking at fractions 1) Students will look at pieces of a fraction and combine them to make a whole. 2) We will also look at expressing whole numbers as fractions 3) Comparing fractions that have the same numerator or the same denominator. We will cover these major points this week. These three will last all week because there are some fun activities that we will get to do to explore fractions this week! We will make pizzas and students will have to add toppings to different parts of the whole and we'll get to play "Trashcan Basketball" and count how many shots out of 8 they make (and record their score in fractions). And we will not have math on Friday due to the half day. Spelling: I will send home a list tomorrow of names of students in our class. Students can use this list to make out valentine cards if they choose to pass them out. I do ask that if they pass out some, they make a valentine for each student in our class. Reminders for the week: On the topic of Valentine's Day, a reminder that our party will be Friday from 10:15-11:15. Students can make a box , use one from a previous year, or use a bag. They do NOT have to have a box. If you signed up to donate for our party, THANK YOU!! And, you may send your items any time this week. We will enjoy ice cream floats and a little activity before the students head to lunch that day at 11:22. Remember, Friday the 14th is a 1/2 day and students will be released at 12:35. I think that is all for the week! Have a great week and let's all hope that winter is on his way OUT OF TOWN. (For good!!!).
